Ground Dance

Project description and realization:

In the course of a boat trip, the sound topography of a lake or river bed is recorded by means of an echosounder that measures the underwater landscape. An audio software is rendered audible by means of data transformation. The acoustic signals transmitted and received by the echosounder are read and transformed into audible sounds by the software. The outcome is an audible topography of life. The echosounder reads the low-lying points of the lake or river bed as low-pitched tones and the shallow points as high-pitched tones. The sound document thus produced creates a an acoustic landscape that is informed with unaccustomed tonal colours and experienced directly by the listener. The soundscape is stored for use in further installations.
