Location
One kilometre shoreline, sandy beach.

Participants
Waves, the sound of the ocean, echo, up to one thousand people
(one man – one meter – one step), blue and yellow energy.

Performance
The interplay of dual polar energy – blue and yellow.
Blue energy is played by a wave of the ocean.
Yellow energy is composed of a yellow path of light played by a chain of yellow
stained people (chorus).

Description of the first rite
THE NIGHT. Four light beams projected into four different directions create a
light cross which illuminates
the motion and the path of an incoming wave.
Wave followed by darkness, darkness followed by wave, wave and light
join together to create a path onto the beach.
While the waves perform their dance, people begin to stain their bodies yellow.

Description of the second rite
THE YELLOW ECHO. The motion of the wave provokes a countermovement witch
is depicted by the chain of yellow people.
A dialogue between the wave and the yellow line (echo) begins – coming and going.

Description of the third rite
BEFORE SUNRISE THE LINE OF YELLOW BODIES SLOWLY FORM A SPIRAL.

Description of the fourth rite
BAPTISM. The spiral turns into a circle which dissolves and dissipates into the sea.
Description it the fifth rite CELEBRATION OF DAYBREAK

Music
The human voice and the voice of nature.

Film
To record the event, six cameras are installed: one camera: ocean to beach
three cameras: beach to ocean
one camera: from the right
one camera: from the left

Film scenario „Baptism“

The night runs
from body to body
from wave to wave
from wave to pulse
the pulse turns into pace
the pace into fatigue
fatigue into a beat
beat upon beat into a scream
the scream turns into echo.
he untiring echo
In the night, infinite and lonely
de-mystifies the warm body
transforms it into stone
the stone turns into a ray
the ray into warm earth
extends under the blue body of the ocean
The waves become intoxicating lips
they drink the light
to the bottom.

• Mythological space is the breath of things – communication between man and his environment.
• Mythological space is not a static term, it is subject to the way mankind changes itself.

• The rite is composed of a technique which makes mythological space visible.
• The rite is the happening which is projected into time.
• The rite is an event of being.
• The rite is the gesture by which man evaluates human space.
• The gestures experience is defined through a meaningful language of symbols and signs.
• The language of the rite does not illustrate an idea – it is itself idea.
• The rite may express itself through all available techniques because it is defined by the desire to communicate.
• The rite makes possible for things to continue to exist in time, which cannot be submitted to a concept like „past – future or presence“.

DANCE OF THE LIGHT

LIGHT DANCE

Four very strong spotlights are placed in the four cardinal points. The spotlights a re in movement; from left to right or from right to left so that the rhythm of the ocean as a body will become visible and is shown each time differently.
The choreography of the rhythm of the light increases its density, starts to cross it self, creates stars and light-islands, pulsates slowly or ever faster – such as that only the body of the ocean is illuminated and that returning wave-body-profiles become visible.


Choreography for the light dance: the ocean, the wave and a light boat.
Place: the bay of Copacabana. 1., 2., 3.: strong light spots. 4.: Spotlight on a driving boat.

Light Choreography

Movement 1
A narrow beam from the light source 2 makes from the darkness coming waves visible again. It moves slowly to the left and touches the ocean surface.

The sound of the ocean is used for the musical composition. The natural rhythm of the surge determines the framework of the composition.

Movement 2
Light source 1 slowly touches the other part of the Copacabana bay. Each time, the wave appears differently.

Emotionally coloured sound timbre of the sea still varies with the sound of the noise of the wave in a special way.

Movement 3
Spot light 2: Only a narrow light beam in the darkness makes the arriving wave noticeable.
The long and strong light beam 2 shines on the wave from the front. At that moment, a
boat arrives in the middle of the light-way.

A wide ranging sound wave arises and plays on the length of the beachside homogeneously with the ocean.

Light source 2 and 4 act by pulsating light in short intervals, the wave-path is illuminated on both sides, giving light to the brilliant water.

The wave sounds stimulates intimacy and embraces warmly and closely –like a breath.

Movement 4
Light source 1 and 3 synchronously move in the bay, cross each other and create light-islands.

The wave breaks in billions of polyphonic sounding drops, which start to thicken and concentrate to a fluent moving sounding sea.

Movement 5
Light source 1 and 3 are directed to the open water, and the big wide ocean-body appears to be infinite as it unites with the horizon. The proximity of the boat is not noticed.

Polyphonic sound density starts to become monochromic.

Movement 6
Light 2 and 4 act together and create a path. The wave is simultaneously illuminated from the front and from behind. The wave movement intensifies.

Long, monochromic sounding waves in multicoloured sound intensities create a unity with the natural sound of the ocean.

Light 1 and 3 start afterwards to cross-over with Light beam 2 and 4, pulsating and acting as a big star.

A woman’s voice is slowly recognized.

Movement 7
Light 1 and 3 beam together and create a light beam / line, which is parallel to the horizon.
At the same moment, Light source 1 and 3 stay put and light source 2 and 4 play together in a circling movement. Unexpected light floods the bay in a pulsating way.

The music turns to a singing voice (see: lyrics A Day Like Every Other)

Movement 8
The light boat starts to take a lengthy spiral course and distances itself eventually from the approaching light of the sunrise.

Everyone joins the song.

Movement 9
Rio awakes, the sunrise is celebrated. Daily urban noises overwhelm Rio. A new day starts like every other!

Music: Hermeto Pasqual
During the whole light dance, loudspeakers are used to play back a stereo music track on the whole Copacabana bay from the left to the right – and vice versus. The sound of the ocean doubles itself. The people on the beach hear the ocean from the front and from behind simultaneously, such as they get the feeling being in the middle of the ocean. As the day gets brighter, the music transforms itself in a song. People start to sing also. The sun appears – a day starts like any other.
